Alt Country Show Coming Up

Posted in Uncategorized by schoolofrock on the May 15, 2008

This coming Tuesday (05/20) we will be celebrating Alt-Country music with a set list that includes some of the latest from the Old 97s new CD Blame it On Gravity as well as great music from Blue Rodeo, Uncle Tupelo, Richard Thompson, Bright Eyes, Wilco, Son Volt, Buddy Miller, Richard Buckner, The Waco Brothers, Eric Ambel, and Justin Townes Earle.  Of course we will also be playing some classics from Grand Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Johnny Cash, and Creedence.

We will be profiling a new great Alt Country band, Thrasher Cadillac!  Check them out at:

And we will also discuss what makes a great Alt Country song…

So, this Tuesday — 2pm on WUDR — that is where the country is being played.  The real country that is.  So tune in and let Dr. J know what you think at drjwudr@gmail.com.

Book Recommendation

Posted in Uncategorized by schoolofrock on the May 13, 2008

Since we all love to read as well as listen to music, here is this week’s book recommendation.  We recommend Suze Rotolo’s A Freewheelin’ Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties.  It covers many of the artists associated with the NYC folkie scene but is focused especially on Bob Dylan.  The author is immortalized next to Dylan for the Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan record.  She is standing right next to him.

This book does the usual effort to dissect Dylan, folk, and the folk music community that was centered in Greenwich Village in the early ’60s.  Rotolo does this with grace and a personal involvement that helps today’s readers — many of who did not participate in the hopefulness of that time — understand it.  And for that alone, the book should be read.

The Summer Season has Begun

Posted in Uncategorized by schoolofrock on the May 13, 2008

Hello School of Rockers,

Ok, well let’s see you come up with something wittier… oh, man.  Alright this week we have great stuff from local Dayton bands Frozen Feet, State of Man, The Rebel Set, Emily Strand, and Aggro1.  We are also playing the about-to-break Cincinnati band Chaselounge.  As always you can count on some non-huge record label super deluxe gigantic record company machine music from bands like Buddy Miller, We Shot the Moon, Nerf Herder, Robert Forster, The Mayflies USA, Justin Townes Earle (yup, Steve’s kid got good too), Ween, Josh Joplin Group, the Spinanes, The Weepies and much more.

As always we find something new and good to praise… this week we are spotlighting the new record, Blame it On Gravity, from The Old 97s.

Also look for great covers from Rhett Miller doing the Beatles “Girl” from Rubber Soul as well as great stuff from The Connells, The Waco Brothers, Counting Crows, and a classic “Hickory Wind” from The Byrds.

And its Dr. J’s birthday… truly.  Hey, would we lie to you?

This coming Tuesday is Dr. J’s Birthday

Yes, its true… the good Dr.’s birthday is this coming Tuesday.

So, in addition to the usual hijinks and new music… call in and wish the doctor happy birthday.

New music from several local Dayton, Ohio bands — The Rebel Set, Frozen Feet, and Emily Strand.  We will also be playing some great music from Cincinnati band Chaselounge.  Expect new stuff from State of Man, Nerf Herder, Robert Forster (former member of the Go Betweens), Justin Townes Earle, The Port Huron Statement, Bridges and Powerlines, and Bauhaus.
