Maxim Review a Lie
A big bold faced absolute non-truth usually points to itself in music. A bum note, a garbled vocal, a botched lyric, an off beat — music can be an unforgiving medium. The same can be said of music reviews… or can it? Maxim’s review of the new Black Crowes record is a lie. The reviewer did not have the record. Could not have heard it. Why you might ask? Because it had not been released and — not one — advanced copies had been made available for review.
The Black Crowes are lashing out at Maxim magazine for reviewing the band’s new album – apparently without actually hearing it first.
The review, published in Maxim’s March issue, gives the Crowes’ “Warpaint” a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five.
“The writer – who has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available – wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing, ‘it hasn’t left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth,’” said a statement on the band’s official Web site.
The band’s manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an “educated guess.”
Educated guess? What is that? How can you judge music you have not heard yet? On what basis can you know about a band’s growth — or lack thereof — if you have not heard it! No, my dear Maxim music reviewer, what you are doing is making it up? Inventing? Creating something out of your preconceptions about the band. And what do we call that, it’s a lie.
R.E.M. ON AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
R.E.M. will appear on the acclaimed PBS live music television series Austin City Limits next month. The concert, which takes place on March 13 during this year’s annual SxSW Music Conference, also marks the first taping of the 34th season of the show.
The televised broadcast will air on PBS stations nationwide later this year. Austin City Limits producer Terry Lickona sees the upcoming R.E.M. concert event as a natural fit for the show. “It feels like this show has been a long time in the making,” he said. “We’ve been talking with R.E.M. for quite awhile about this, and we’re thrilled to see it coming together for our first taping of the new season. That they’ve picked our stage to showcase their first new CD in four years means a lot to everyone at Austin City Limits. Having this great American rock band as our guest is, in many ways, the embodiment of our show. We can hardly wait!”
